Assessing and estimating foreign language skills is a crucial aspect of language learning and teaching. Traditionally, language proficiency has been evaluated through standardized tests or oral interviews. However, these methods often fail to capture the dynamic and multifaceted nature of language use, especially among young learners. In recent years, the use of educational games for language learning and assessment has gained traction as a more engaging and interactive way to evaluate language skills. In this study, we explore the potential of game-based assessment for school learners’ foreign language skills. Specifically, we investigate the effectiveness of using digital and traditional games to assess students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities in a foreign language.

The use of digital and traditional games in educational settings has become increasingly popular in recent years. Obviously, games or gamification (scientists consider gamification as game elements using in non-game contexts) offer an engaging and interactive way for students to learn and practice new skills, including foreign language acquisition [1, p. 219]. Game-based assessment offers several benefits for school learners in the context of foreign language education. Firstly, games can create a low-stakes environment where learners feel less pressure and are more willing to take risks and make mistakes. This can be particularly beneficial for young language learners who may feel anxious about speaking or writing in a foreign language. Additionally, games can provide immediate feedback, which is essential for language learning and can help learners improve their skills in real time. Finally, game-based assessments can increase motivation and engagement, as learners are more likely to be invested in the assessment process if it is enjoyable and interactive.

Gamification can be effective tools for language learning and the impact of game-based assessments on school learners' foreign language skills is also very promising. [2] The application of gamification in testing and assessment has also been an area of interest for researchers, with several recent studies shedding light on its potential benefits and challenges.

One study by Johnson (2020) explored the use of gamified assessment in a university setting and found that it led to higher levels of engagement and motivation among students. The researchers developed a gamified quiz platform that incorporated elements such as leaderboards, badges, and progress tracking, and found that students were more willing to participate and put in effort compared to traditional assessments. Another study by Lee (2020) examined the psychometric properties of gamified assessments and found that while they can provide valuable insights into student learning and skills, they may also introduce biases and measurement errors that need to be carefully considered.

In addition to its impact on student engagement and performance, gamified testing also raises questions about its validity and reliability as an assessment method. A study by Overall, the latest research on gamification and testing suggests that while it has the potential to enhance engagement and motivation, its impact on test performance and assessment quality may vary. Further studies are needed to better understand the conditions under which gamification is most effective and how it can be integrated into testing practices in a meaningful and reliable way.

In general, studied research show that games provide students with authentic, interactive, and contextualized language experiences, allowing them to practice and develop their language skills in a fun and motivating way. Additionally, games can provide immediate feedback to learners, helping them to track their progress and identify areas for improvement. Game-based assessment, which integrates language learning with assessment strategies, has the potential to provide a comprehensive and authentic evaluation of students’ language abilities.

Game-based assessment as an emerging trend in educational assessment has gained popularity due to its ability to engage learners and provide authentic measures of skills and knowledge. Games can be used to assess various language skills, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing. They offer interactive and immersive experiences that simulate real-life language use and allow learners to demonstrate their communicative abilities in a stress-free environment. Despite the potential of game-based assessment, unfortunately, it is not widely used in school education nowadays, the reason is that teachers sometimes face the difficulty to integrate game-based assessment into language education; teachers do not know how to utilize a variety of digital and non-digital games. By the way, digital games, such as language learning apps and educational software, offer a wide range of interactive and adaptive assessment activities. Non-digital games, such as role-playing activities and board games, provide opportunities for hands-on language practice and assessment. Educators can also create their own game-based assessment tasks tailored to specific language learning goals and proficiency levels.

In the article we propose some practical strategies for incorporating game-based assessment. When organizing testing and estimation of foreign language skills with the help of games, educators should consider a few practical strategies [3, p.]. First, we believe, they should align game-based assessment tasks with language learning objectives and proficiency standards. This ensures that assessment activities are relevant and meaningful to learners' language development. Teachers can use existing language learning games or adapt popular games to assess language proficiency. For example, a traditional board game can be modified to include language tasks such as answering questions or practicing vocabulary. Additionally, teachers can utilize digital platforms and apps that are specifically designed for language learning and assessment. These platforms often include interactive games that can be used to assess various language skills, such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Another practical strategy is to design and create custom games that are tailored to the specific language learning objectives of the students. This can involve creating board games, card games, or online games that are centered on the target language. For example, a vocabulary matching game or a role-playing game can be designed to assess students’ knowledge and understanding of the target language.

Furthermore, integrating game-based assessment into classroom activities can provide a holistic approach to language learning and assessment. For example, teachers can implement game-based tasks as part of a larger project or unit of study, allowing students to demonstrate their language proficiency in a meaningful context. This can include incorporating games into group projects, presentations, or skits that require language skills.

Also, educators should provide clear instructions and guidelines for game-based assessment tasks to ensure fairness and consistency in assessment administration. Teachers should use a variety of game-based assessment formats, such as quizzes, simulations, and performance tasks, to assess different language skills and abilities [4, p.117]. In this paper a few examples of assessment games can be proposed, such as:

1. Vocabulary and grammar quizzes: These types of games can be used to test students' knowledge of vocabulary and grammar rules in a fun and interactive way.

2. Role-playing games: Role-playing games can be used to assess students' speaking and listening skills by placing them in real-life scenarios and assessing their ability to communicate effectively in the foreign language.

3. Board games: Board games can be adapted to test foreign language skills by incorporating questions and challenges related to vocabulary, grammar, and cultural knowledge.

4. Mobile apps and online games: There are various language learning apps and online games that can be used for testing purposes, allowing students to practice their language skills in a digital environment.

5. Vocabulary building games: These games can be used to assess students' ability to recognize and recall foreign language vocabulary by presenting them with different word-based challenges.

6. Translation games: Translation games can be used to test students' ability to translate between their native language and the foreign language, assessing their understanding and application of language knowledge.

7. Listening and comprehension games: These games can be used to test students' ability to understand spoken language in a foreign language and to assess their comprehension skills.

8. Writing games: Writing games can be used to evaluate students' ability to write in a foreign language, assessing their grasp of spelling, grammar, and syntax.

Definitely, a teacher can use or create a lot of different examples of game-based assessment tasks for special educational goals, for a special school class. Anyway, our findings indicate that game-based assessment can provide valuable insights into students’ language abilities. The digital games offered a more authentic and engaging way for students to demonstrate their language skills, compared to traditional assessment methods. Additionally, the immediate feedback provided by the games allowed students to reflect on their performance and make improvements in real time [5]. At the same time, teachers can easily create and organize traditional games, they are more flexible and do not require technical support. Overall, game-based assessment was found to be an effective and reliable means of evaluating learners’ foreign language skills.

To conclude we admit that testing and estimating foreign language skills are crucial for both learners and educators. Language proficiency assessments provide learners with valuable feedback on their language abilities, help educators monitor student progress, and inform curriculum and instructional planning. Traditional methods of testing, such as written tests and oral interviews, are often perceived as stressful and lack engagement. Additionally, they may not accurately measure a learner's communicative competence and ability to use language in real-life situations. Hence, there is a growing need for innovative and effective approaches to language assessment,game-based assessment is one of the most promising approaches to organizing testing and estimation of foreign language skills.
