Воинское звание lieutenant в истории английской военной терминологии

Аннотация: Статья посвящена изучению этимологии и семантики группы лексических единиц, связанных с воинским званием lieutenant. Актуальность статьи обусловлена необходимостью и интересом к изучению возникновения и эволюции воинских званий и английской военной иерархии. Автор проводит семантико-этимологический и словообразовательный анализ лексических единиц, имеющих отношение к воинскому званию lieutenant, изучает «прототипы» в среднефранцузском и англо-нормандском языках, рассматривает особенности появления наименований воинского звания в английском языке. Новизна исследования состоит в том, что проведенный анализ лексических единиц позволяет расширить знания об эволюции английского языка и истоках английской военной терминологии. Практическая значимость исследования заключается применении его результатов в рамках курсов по исторической лексикологии и истории языка.

Abstract: The article deals with the study of the etymology and semantics of words related to the military rank lieutenant. The relevance of the article is due to the need and interest in studying the emergence and evolution of military ranks and the English military terminology. The author carries out the analysis of semantics, etymology and word-formation of lexical units related to lieutenant, and the study of the “prototypes” of the term in the Middle French and Anglo-Norman languages, considers the peculiarities of the emergence of nominations of the military rank in the English language. The novelty of this research lies in the fact that the analysis of words makes it possible to expand the knowledge about the language evolution and origins of the English military terminology. The practical significance of the research lies in the application of its results in courses of historical lexicology and the history of the language.

Введение
Цель данного исследования заключается в семантическом и историко-этимологическом анализе лексических единиц (далее – ЛЕ), связанных с воинским званием lieutenant.
Теоретической базой исследования послужили труды таких исследователей, как Голубенко Е.А. [1]; Дернова C.Н., Копа Д.О. [2]; Мунгалова Т.И., Федотова И.П. [3]; Паневина И.Г. [4]; Dupuy R.E., Dupuy T.N. [5].
Материал исследования: ЛЕ, связанные с происхождением и семантической эволюцией воинского звания lieutenant, и примеры их употребления, полученные методом целенаправленной выборки из Большой Российской энциклопедии [6]; Военной энциклопедии под редакцией Величко К.И., Новицкого В.О. и др. [7]; Французско-русского фразеологического словаря [8]; Anglo-Norman Dictionary [9]; Etymological dictionary of the French language [10]; Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary [11]; Dictionnaire de la langue française [12]; Middle English Compendium [13]; Oxford English Dictionary [14]; World English Historical Dictionary [15] и другой справочной литературы в сети Интернет [16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22].
Методы и приемы исследования: метод целенаправленной выборки, компонентно-дефиниционный анализ, историко-этимологический анализ, словообразовательный анализ, описательный метод, контекстуальный анализ, приемы обобщения и квалификации.
Обсуждение
Появление воинских званий отражает эволюцию как социальной иерархии, так и военного искусства. Первоначально роли в армии распределялись соответственно силе, лидерским качествам и социальному статусу воинов. По мере увеличения численного состава войск, происходило усложнение военной иерархии, поскольку требовалось более четкое разграничение ролей для повышения эффективности командования.
В Средние века отсутствовала строгая иерархия рангов. Феодалов можно назвать «прототипами» современных офицеров, которые имели обязательства перед королем привести определённое количество войск по требованию правителя [1, 6]. В данном статье рассматривается история появления ЛЕ, связанных воинском званием младшего офицерского состава в вооружённых силах – lieutenant.
Этимологический анализ показал, что ЛЕ lieutenant заимствована из среднефранцузского языка в среднеанглийский язык в 14 веке [6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21]:
англ.–норм. liu (1120-12 в.) “place, area”, «место» < лат. locum “in place of” + англ.–норм. tenant (1136-37) “holding, possessing land or property by title or feudal obligation from a superior” < причастие настоящего времени tenir «замещающий» < лат. tenēre “to hold” < протоиндоевр. *ten- “to stretch”.
ЛЕ lieutenant буквально переводится как “placeholder”, “one who takes the place of another”, “substitute, deputy for a higher authority”, “someone holding a position (as in the absence of a superior)” [14], «заместитель», «наместник».
I. Семантические особенности ЛЕ lieutenant в среднефранцузском и англо-нормандском языках [8, 9, 10, 12, 16, 17, 18]
В среднефранцузском языке исторически первичное значение ЛЕ lieutenant – (1260) “celui qui est immédiatement au-dessous d'un chef, qu'il supplée en certains cas” «тот, кто находится ниже начальника (правителя) и является его заместителем в определенных случаях» [9, 11, 12, 16]. В англо-нормандском языке, языке британской элиты, основном рабочем языке всей Англии после её завоевания Вильгельмом Завоевателем в 1066 г., ЛЕ имела сходные значения [9]:
1. “deputy, one who holds office during his superior's absence”: (1306) a meisme le lieu et tens escrit fuit [...] au gardeyn del evesché de Durreme, ou a son lieutenant, de meisme le tenur [9]; (1345) puis comanda brief al Justice de Cestre ou son lieu tenant de trier le fait [9];
2. “lieutenant, a royal official representing the king, usually as governor of an area”: (1296) A son tres honurable seigneur, mon seigneur le roi d’Engleterre, le son Henri, compte de Nichole, son leu tenaunt en la duché de Guyenne [9]; (1305) prient il que nul homme ne prenge prises ne cariages for nostre seignur le Roy ou sun leu tenant [9].
Примечательно, что в англо-нормандском языке параллельно функционировала синонимичная ЛЕ tenant (le) liu со значениями:
1. “deputy, one who fulfils office during the holder's absence”: (ок.1292) si acun viscounte ou tenaunt lu le viscounte en counté ou en fraunchise soursece de fere dreit al pleintif [9];
2. “lieutenant, royal official representing the king, usually as governor of an area”: (1286) sire Edmond, [...] tenaunt le leu nostre seignur le roy [9].
Воинское звание лейтенанта было установлено во Франции в 15 веке: сначала на флоте, затем в сухопутных войсках [6].
II. Характеристика ЛЕ lieutenant после заимствования в английский язык [11, 13, 14, 15, 18, 19]
После заимствования ЛЕ имела большое количество графических вариантов [14]: (1300–1500) lieutenant, lutenand, lutena(u)nt, luf-tenand, luff tenande; leu(e)-, leuȝ-, lyeu-, leef-, leyf-, lyef-, leve-, lyff(e-, (1300–1600-е) lieu-, (1300–1700) lief-, (1500-е) leftenaunt, leftennant, leftenant, lyue-, liue-, lieue-, leaue-, lew-, lefe-, lyffe-, lyve-, lieuf-, (1500-е) шотл. lewtennand, (1500-е–1600е) live-, liefe-, leive-, leif-, (1600-е) leiu-; liev-, life-, (1300–1600-е) -tenante, -aunt, (1300–1500-е) -aunte, (1300–1600-е) -ant, (1500-е–1600-е) -ent, -tennent, -ante. Вероятно, некоторые формы могли появиться из-за путаницы с формами существительного leave (leaf, leafe, lef, leif, leyf, leyfe, lefe, leffe, leefe, leeffe, leif, leife, leiff, leyf, leyfe) и прилагательного lief (leof, luf, luef, lef, lef(f)e, lewe, leefe, leeff, leaf, leif, leyf, leife, lyfe, liefe, lief). Носители английского языка также могли принять особенность luef (редкого старофранцузского варианта ЛЕ lieu) за буквы v или f [11, 13, 14, 15, 18, 19].
Исторически первичное значение ЛЕ “one who takes the place of another; usually, an officer civil or military who acts for a superior; a representative, substitute, vicegerent” распространено с середины среднеанглийского и на протяжении новоанглийского периода. Контекстуальный анализ показал, что ЛЕ lieutenant чаще всего использовалась для обозначения наместника высокопоставленного лица, как правило, короля, Папы Римского:
(1387) Hubert archebisshop of Caunterbury was leeftenaunt [lutenant, levetenaunt] of þe pope and of the kyng of Engelond [14];
(1480) He beyng that tyme lyeutenaunt of the kyng in Normandye [14];
(1487 (до 1380) Schir richard of clare, That ... luf-tenend [1489 lufftenande] Maid be the king of yngland [14];
(ок. 1500) Sersuell ... held the said Fortres as lieuftenaunt & Captayne there for the kyng of England [14];
(1651) God was King, and the High priest was to be (after the death of Moses) his sole Viceroy, or Lieutenant [14].
В период 1377–1708 гг. ЛЕ использовалась в метафорическом контексте, однако с течением времени значение вышло из употребления из-за сильных ассоциаций с военной сферой:
(1377) Ac liberum arbitrium letteth hym some tyme, Þat is lieutenant to loken it wel by leue of myselue [14];
(ок. 1425) Then made Vertu Reson hys lyeftenaunt [14];
(до 1500) He [God] maid Natur to be his luff tenande [14];
(до 1708) The Holy Ghost, Christ's Lieutenant, that supplies the place of the absent Captain [14].
В среднеанглийский период зафиксировано значение, которое использовалось в качестве синонима латинской ЛЕ legatus, proconsul, suffectus, греческой ЛЕ ἡγεμών. Значение чаще всего использовалось в религиозном контексте, в Библии: (1388) Suffectus ... ether lutenaunt [14]; (1526) Syrenus was leftenaunt in Siria [14]; (1557) Lieutenant of Jurie [14]. Отдельные примеры относятся к переводу жизнеописаний, трудов по истории и географии. Значение вышло из употребления:
(1553) Metellus celer, proconsull or leauetenaunte of Fraunce [14];
(1636) Fulvius remaining Lieftenant in the army ... for that the Consull was gon to Rome [14];
(1741) The whole administration of the corn and provisions of the Republic was to be granted to Pompey for five years, with a power of chusing fifteen Lieutenants to assist him in it [14].
Ближе к концу среднеанглийского периода зафиксировано значение “formal title of office”, обычно с указанием конкретного места прохождения службы, например, Lieutenant of the Tower (of London), Lieutenant of Ireland и др.:
(1423) He beyng the Kynges Lieutenaunt in the said Londe [of Ireland] [14];
(1454) The Duk of York, the Kynges Lieutenant of his Parlement [14];
(1481) Lieutenaunt of the toun of Calays [14];
(1495) His Lyeutenaunte of Ireland and Gardeyn of the ... Marches [14];
(1596) Mr. Leivetenant of the Tower [14].
Стоит отметить отдельные примеры функционирования ЛЕ для обозначения должности в войсках и на флоте:
(до 1604) Whereupon he made Reimond Lievetenant of the forces [14];
(1667) Your petitioners were directed by the Lieutenant of his Majestie's Ordnance to make a marching barricade, to carry six small gunns [14];
(1679) He was lieftenant of the ordinance [14];
(1702) Her Majesty has been pleased to appoint Sir George Rooke … Lieutenant of the Navies and Seas of this Kingdom [14].
Следует отметить окказиональное обозначение должности a Lord of Misrule (“person (traditionally a man) chosen to preside over games and other revelry during the Christmas period (occasionally at other times)”) при помощи ЛЕ Lieutenant: (†1655) That Christmas the Temple Sparks had enstalled a Lieutenant, a thing we Country folk call a Lord of Misrule [14]. Возможно, на данный факт повлияло функционирование ЛЕ Lord Lieutenant “Any of various high-ranking officers of state in other countries and regions, often having the function of provincial governor, viceroy, etc.” (1548).
Утверждение системы воинских званий в сухопутных войсках и на флоте произошло в ранненовоанглийский период, что привело к терминологизации значения ЛЕ. В сухопутных войсках ЛЕ lieutenant со значением «воинское звание» зафиксировано в 1578 году:
(1578) Who in his youth applied himselfe to the warres, and was lieutenant to a companie of horsemen [14];
(1653) The Lieutenant of the Troop ... needs no new Commission [14];
(1702) A Lievtenant of a Foot company [14].
На военно-морском флоте Англии ЛЕ lieutenant стала использоваться для обозначения “the officer next in rank and power below the commander”: (1626) The Lieutenant is to associate the Captaine, and in his absence to execute his place [14]. Зафиксировано окказиональное использование ЛЕ †lieutenant at arms в Universal Dictionary of Marine (W. Falconer): (1769) The youngest lieutenant of the ship, who is also stiled lieutenant at arms … is particularly ordered ... to train the seamen to the use of small arms [14].
В новоанглийский период зафиксировано значение “an officer in the Salvation Army”. Вильям Бутс – методистский священник начал вести службу в Лондоне в 1865 году, основал пункты кормления нищих и обездоленных. В 1878 году ввёл в оборот ЛЕ Salvation Army (Армия спасения) [20]: The Salvation Army is marching along [14]. Цель организации – привить религиозные чувства в низших слоях общества в Великобритании. Постепенно армия спасения стала квази-военной организацией и получила распространение в других странах:
(1884) Go to the crowd of sinners, or spot them individually ... because out of them you may make Lieutenants, and Captains, and Majors, and Generals [14];
(1970) I love the Salvation Army through which I found my Saviour ... Yours faithfully, Lars Juhlin. Lieutenant [14].
В 1884 году американское подразделение Армии спасения отделилось от штаб-квартиры в Великобритании, и была основана the American Salvation Army, однако она вскоре пришла в упадок. В 1896 году в Нью-Йорке была основана организация Volunteers of America со сходной квази-военной структурой [20].
В начале 20 века в американском варианте английского языка появляется значение “a police officer next in rank below a captain; also, a senior prison officer”:
(1907) [In Glasgow] when a prisoner was brought into a police station the lieutenant on duty would not accept the charge ... unless [etc.] [14];
(1909) In Boston, St. Louis, Baltimore, and a few other cities, ... provision has been made for a lieutenant of police. Such lieutenants of police exercise all the powers and discharge all of the duties of captains, in the event of the sickness or absence of the latter [14].
С начала до примерно середины 20 века существовала должность lieutenant “an assistant to the captain of a company of Girl Guides”. История движения Girl Guides началась в 1909 году, когда группа девочек появилась на встрече бойскаутов в Великобритании и объявила себя гёрлскаутами. Основатель движения Boy Scouts лорд Роберт Баден-Пауэлл создать аналогичное движение для девочек и молодых девушек. Руководство движения Girl Guides появилось в том же году [22]: (1909) The unit for work or play is the ‘Patrol’ of eight girls, of whom one is ‘Patrol Leader’, another the ‘Corporal’. Three or more Patrols form a Company under a ‘Captain’ and a ‘Lieutenant’ [14]. В 1910 году Girl Guide Association была официально основана в Великобритании под руководством Агнес Баден-Пауэлл, сестры Роберта Бадена-Пауэлла: (1932) There is not much objection to ‘captain’, which is not exclusively military ...; but there was at one time a great agitation against the term ‘lieutenant’. Suggestions were invited from the Movement, but no better name was sent in [14]. В 1966 году было принято решение использовать Guide Leader вместо Captain, Assistant Guide Leader вместо Lieutenant: (1966) Guide Leader [and] Assistant Guide Leader … should be used instead of Captain and Lieutenant. We believe that the time has come to drop the terms Captain and Lieutenant which, when used in conjunction with each other, have a military sound [14].
III. Характеристика ЛЕ с синонимичным значением [11, 13, 14, 15, 18, 19]
A. Собственно английские ЛЕ
В среднеанглийский период получила распространение ЛЕ pety captayn “an officer ranking next below a captain; a lieutenant”, образованная при помощи словосложения [Adj. + N]:
(ок. 1475) And sum of the pety captaynys were be-heddyd at Towre Hylle at London [14];
(?ок. 1475 (1450)) Sir Thomas Kyrielle ... was destrussed..by dyvyson and controversie of hys petycapteyns negligently tarying yn Normandie at her landing [14].
Контекстуальный анализ также выявил примеры использования ЛЕ в религиозном контексте:
(ок. 1500 (?до 1475)) As for pety capteyns many mo the[r] wase, As Sacrylege, Symony, & Dyssimulacion [14];
(ок. 1500 (?до 1475)) Whyle these pety-capteynes susteynyd thus the feelde, With Vertew hys rerewarde came Good Perseueraunce [14];
(1526) When the pety captayne ... sawe the erth quake [14].
В настоящее время ЛЕ является историзмом. Обратим внимание на синонимичную ЛЕ с прилагательным французского происхождения †petit captein/captaine, образованную по аналогии с ЛЕ pety captayne:
(1548) Every captain to give yearely ijs; every petit-captein xijd [14];
(1577) Holland, petite captaine to Salisbury [14].
В среднеанглийский период словарный состав пополнился ЛЕ lord Lievtenand со значением †“the title of an officer appointed by the Scottish Crown to act as its deputy or representative”, которое вышло из употребления примерно через столетие:
(1453) He wald noght find caucion and sourete that the lord Lievtenand suld hald ferme and stable quhat the said Ranald did [14];
(1577) Shortly after, there was a conuention of the Lordes at Striueling, where the Earle of Lennox was made lord Lieutenant of Scotlande [14].
Дальнейшая семантическая эволюция привела к появлению значения “the title of a representative of the British (formerly English) Crown in a county (or similar area)”. Данное значение синонимично значению ЛЕ Lieutenant “a formal title of office” с указанием конкретного места службы: (1423) He beyng the Kynges Lieutenaunt in the said Londe [of Ireland] [14].
Впервые должность Lord Lieutenant появилась при правлении короля Генриха VIII с целью передачи им военных функций шерифа (sheriff – a high officer, the representative of the royal authority in a shire):
(1548) The lorde Gray of Wylton, lorde lieuetenaunt of Bolleyn, hygh Marshall of the armie, and Capitayn general of al the horsmen there [14];
(1558) The lorde Lieuetenaunt ... during the time of any his or theyr commission, shal and may heare, order, & determine the same offences, by his or their discretions [14];
(1642) The Lord Lievtenants ... do nominate and appoint one experienced Souldier in every Regiment to be an Adjutor [14].
В 1662 году они получили полный контроль над militia ((1590) †the body of soldiers in the service of a sovereign or a state):
(1671) For furnishing Ammunition, and other Necessaries, the Lord Lieutenant ... may levy every year one fourth part (if they judge it expedient) of each mans proportion in the Tax of 70000 l. a moneth upon the whole Kingdom [14];
(1839) From the reign of Philip and Mary the lords-lieutenants have had the charge, under the sovereign, of raising the militia in their respective counties [14].
В 1871 году эти полномочия были возвращены Короне. Lord Lieutenants ранее также являлись главой магистратов (magistrate – †a judge) и пэрами (peer – a member of a rank of hereditary nobility in Britain or Ireland; a duke, marquess, earl, viscount, or baron).
В ранненовоанглийский период зафиксировано значение “any of various high-ranking officers of state in other countries and regions, often having the function of provincial governor, viceroy, etc.”:
(1548) There were kepers moreouer set there of the Lorde lieutenauntes [Pilates] men [14];
(1568) Red, proclaymed and published, with sounde of Trumpet ..., by the Kings maiesties Heralds, assisting and being present the Lord Lieutenant ciuile and others [14].
Контекстуальный анализ показал, что иностранных трудах, описывающих историю России, в качестве русского эквивалента Lord Lieutenant используется ЛЕ наместник:
(1884) An embassy was sent to Stockholm, consisting of the Okólnitchy and Lord-Lieutenant of Tcheboksáry, Ivan Prontchístchef ..., and Lord-Lieutenant of Borófsk, Peter Prontchístchef [14];
(1997) The position of lord lieutenant [namestnik] which, the new emperor believed, enjoyed too much independence, was eliminated [14].
С конца 17 века Lord Lieutenant исполнял функции “chief governor of Ireland, appointed by the British (formerly English) Crown”. Lord Lieutenant оставался главой британского правительства в Ирландии до создания Свободного Ирландского государства 6 декабря 1922 года согласно англо-ирландскому договору 1921 года:
(1564) Thomas Earle of Sussex, Lord Lieutenaunt of Ireland, and Captain of the Pensioners [14];
(1916) The Lord Lieutenant of Ireland left Dublin on Saturday morning for England [14].
Договор завершил трёхлетнюю войну за независимость между провозглашённой в январе 1919 года Ирландской Республикой и британским правительством, при этом 26 из 32 ирландских графств стали доминионом в составе Британской империи [20].
С середины ранненовоанглийского периода до середины 19 века (1544-1825 гг.) семантическая структура ЛЕ Lord Lieutenant пополнилась значением, относящимся к военной сфере, †“the title of the second in command of an army, when a peer”:
(1544) My lorde Admyral ledde the vantgard, ... and Therle of Hertford beinge lorde Lieutenaunt, the battayll [14];
(1578) Their deuise was this: that ... the Earle of Warwickes (Lorde Lieutenant of the armie) bande ... enounter the enimies a front [14];
(1825) The Earl of Warwick, Lord Lieutenant of the Army, conferred the honour of knighthood upon him at Berwick [14].
Зафиксированы отдельные примеры употребления такого варианта, как Lord Lieutenant General: (1743) In 1858 he was appointed Lord Lieutenant General of the army designed for the assistance of the United Provinces against the Spaniard [14].
В настоящее время должность Lord Lieutenant является главным образом церемониальной, основная обязанность заключается в организации королевских визитов в страну:
(1962) With the disappearance of the militia the lord lieutenant has ceased to have a county force to command [14];
(2011) The awards were presented by the Lord-Lieutenant for Dorset [14].
ЛЕ place-holder образована путем словосложения place и holder [калька с ЛЕ lieutenant: lieu + tenant]. Исторически первичное значение †“a person who acts as deputy for another; a lieutenant, a proxy” (1560-ок. 1610) получило распространение в Шотландии:
(1560) Committed by the place-holders of the ministrie [14];
(1566) His deputtis and place haldaris [14].
Производное значение “a person who or thing which occupies a position on behalf of another”: (1927) General Averescu was originally selected by M. Bratiano to act as his place-holder temporarily while M. Bratiano lived down his unpopularity in retirement [14].
ЛЕ under Lieutenant [under + lieutenant] – калька с французской ЛЕ sous-lieutenant “sub-lieutenant” (Ср. с Sub-Lieutenant (1684), голл. onderluitenant (кон. 17 века), нем. Unterleutnant, †Unterlieutenant (кон. 16 века – unterleutenant, unterleutenambt):
(1684) Ten of the Granadiers were slain, and 2 mortally wounded; the Captain had his Arm broken, and the Sub-Lieutenant was wounded [14];
(1691) One under Lieutenant, one Aid-Major ... killed [14];
(1730) An under Lieutenant [14].
Cистема воинских званий ранненовоанглийского периода отличалась от современной. Капитан-лейтенант – старший младший офицерский чин в британской армии, выше лейтенанта и ниже капитана. История возникновения это воинского звания восходит к 17 веку, когда командование на поле боя часто переходило от полковника к подполковнику. Поскольку в роте полковника не было капитана, то лейтенант становился исполняющим обязанности капитана (ср. с ЛЕ pety captayne (ок. 1475), †petit captein/captaine (1548)). В итоге это было официально закреплено введением воинского звания captain-lieutenant. Согласно Большому Оксфордскому словарю, первая письменная фиксация ЛЕ captain-lieutenant приписывается Оливеру Кромвелю – лорд-протектору Англии, Шотландии и Ирландии, лейтенант-генералу, который в 1645 году начал реорганизацию и укрепление армии, чтобы сформировать «Армию нового образца»: (1643) My captain-lieutenant slew him [14].
В энциклопедии Э. Чемберса (первое издание, 1728 год) присутствует две синонимичные ЛЕ, обозначающие воинское звание, Captain Lieutenant и †Lieutenant Captain [14]. В энциклопедии даётся следующее определение воинских званий:
(1728) Captain Lieutenant, is he who commands a Troop, or Company, in the Name and Place of some other Person, who has the Commission, with the Title, Honour, and Pay thereof; but is dispens'd withal, on account of his Quality, from performing the Functions of his Post [14];
(1728) Lieutenant Captain, is the Captain's Second; or the Officer who commands the Company under the Captain, and in his absence... In some Companies, &c. he is call'd Captain Lieutenant [14].
ЛЕ Captain Lieutenant и †Lieutenant Captain вышли из употребления, поскольку воинское звание было упразднено.
ЛЕ luff разговорного стиля образована при помощи сокращения ЛЕ lieutenant (clipping, shortening). Впервые зафиксирована в “Westminster Gazette”:
(1836) The Hon. Mr. B., our junior luff [14];
(1898) The future ‘Luffs’—in other words, the naval cadets at Dartmouth—are to be reduced in point of numbers [14].
Аналогичным способом образована ЛЕ loot, которая является примером американского военного сленга. ЛЕ отражает особенности североамериканского произношения ЛЕ lieutenant /l(j)uˈtɛnənt/, которое зафиксировано во второй половине 1800 гг.) [6]:
(1898) R-run over an' wake up th' loot at th' station [14];
(1918) He's a loot-colonel now and a D.S.C [14];
(1921) In the United States this officer is called the lootenant, which the privates of the American Expeditionary Force in France habitually shortened to ‘loot’ [14].
Другим примером североамериканского военного сленга является ЛЕ Looey [lieu- (сокращение ЛЕ lieutenant) с произношением /luː/ + суффикс ‑y, ‑ie]:
(1916) The ‘Looey’ gaily saunters from his tent [14];
(1920) Our louie's name's Duval [14];
(1928) Then the looeys started hollering to the sergeants [14];
(1935) Looie, a police lieutenant [14].
B. Заимствования из латинского языка
Заимствование из латинского языка legat обозначает «посол», “the deputy of a general or governor of a province; the provincial governor himself” и связано с историей Римской империи [lēgātus “ambassador, envoy, representative, delegate, assistant to a general or provincial governor, deputy of the emperor” < lēgāre “to send as a deputy”, “to bequeath”]. В Древнем Риме легат выполнял функции посла или уполномоченного. В эпоху поздней республики легаты являлись помощниками полководцев и наместников в римской провинции. В период правления императора Ю. Цезаря и потом императора Августа легатам стали поручать командование легионами. Легаты наделялись консульской властью (legatus Augusti pro praetore “legates of Augustus with authority of a praetor”) и выполняли функции наместников в провинциях Римской империи [20]:
(1474) The rooks ... ben vicaires and legats of the kynge [14];
(до 1538) And ... passit aganis the Romanis in batell & ... slew the legat & Hircy the imperouris procutor [14];
(1603) With the armie they sende diuers of their gentlemen as Legats or prouiditors, who neuer stirre from the side of the captaine Generall [14];
(2002) It was struck by Lucius Plaetoris Cestianus who was both a moneyer and a legate acting on behalf of Brutus Imperator [14].
Латинская ЛЕ locum tenent-, locum tenens “person who holds the place of another, substitute, deputy” [класс.лат. locum < locus “place” + прич. наст. вр. tenēns < tenēre “to hold”] послужила основой для образования ЛЕ с использованием модифицированной ЛЕ lieutenant. Значение †“lieutenant” получило распространение в Шотландии в 1492–1544 годах:
(1492) My lord Huntlie, locumtenant [14];
(1544) For furnesing of ane thowsand horse to remain with the locumtenant on the bordouris, for resisting of our auld ennimeis of Ingland [14];
(1544) And als thair was presentit in iugment twa writingis of the Erle of Huntlie, locumtenent generale of the north of Scotland [14].
ЛЕ vitzgerent (1549) [средневек.лат. vicegerent-, vicegerens < лат. vicem “stead, place, office, etc.” + gerens < gerĕre “to carry, hold”] имеет значением “a substitute of a king or other ruler”: (1643) The Governours of Ireland ... were at first called Justices ... afterwards, Lievtenants; and their Vice-gerents were called Deputies [14]. Производное значение, относящееся к военной сфере, – “a ruler or commander of a country, etc., in virtue of deputed power” появилось ранненовоанглийский период:
(1577) Herewith he [Richard I] dothe commaunde them also to obey Robert Earle of Leycester, whome he appointed ... as his Lieutenant or vicegerent of those parties during his absence [14];
(1589) The Romanes had made mee Vicegerente of their forces [14].
ЛЕ vise/vice – заимствование из латинского языка [лат. vice < vicis “change, turn, stead, place”] со значением “one who acts in the place of another; a substitute or deputy”:
(1597) The Barbers were serued and they cut them, and were as Ioues Vises to make them fit for warre [14];
(1728) Deputy is also frequently used among us, for an Office, or Employ, not a Dignity; and stands indifferently for a Vice, or Lieutenant [14].
C. Заимствования из среднефранцузского и англо-нормандского языков
ЛЕ vicaire заимствована из англо-нормандского языка со значением “one acting, or appointed to act, in place of another, esp. in administrative functions; a vicegerent” [англ.-норм. vikere, vicare, vicaire (ст.-франц. vicaire) < лат. vicārius “substitute” < vicis “change, occasion, place (of another), etc”]:
(ок. 1400) Folwe þanne vche comandour tene vicaires, & vche vicaire tene lederes [14];
(1430–40) In his empyre he set two vicars, Gaue them power in euery region [etc.].
Контекстуальный анализ показал пример функционирования ЛЕ lieutenent и vicare, King's Vicar и Vicegerent-Generall как синонимов:
(1533) I wil mak him (for he is weil institute in chevelrie) vicare and lieutenent for me [14];
(1655) Lord Cromwell ... sate in state above all the Bishops, as the King's Vicar, or Vicegerent-Generall in all spirituall matters [14].
C конца среднеанглийского периода до середины 19 века синонимами ЛЕ Lord Lieutenant служили ЛЕ †lordes debyte (1467)/†debet (1482)/†depute lieutenaunt (ок. 1490)/Lord Deputy (1538)/debutie, -ee, -y (1568) [франц. député < députer]:
(1467) I was my lordes debyte at is dessyre [14];
(ок. 1490) Our right gode lord Gerald erle of Kyldare your depute lieutenaunt of this your land of Irland [14];
(1538) The saide Lorde Deputie refused to accepte the same, whiche afterwarde, of his awne swynge ... he received [14];
(1614) Some succeeding Princes ... had their ... Lord Lieutenants or Deputies (as at this day they are called) of Ireland, which were, as Viceroy's, by Patent, with most large Power [14].
Следует отметить, что debyte, debet являются искаженными формами ЛЕ depute: (1482) The Master ... every Þursday to be at the common halle, or els a debet ffor hym [14]; (1535) Arioch beinge then the kynges debyte [14]. Отмечается употребление в переводах Священных писаний совместно с синонимичной ЛЕ: (1549) The vycar and debyte of Christ [14]. Контекстуальный анализ показал, что ЛЕ lieutenaunt и ЛЕ debytie/debitie также функционируют как синонимы: (1548) The Lieftenaunt of the citie, who was the debytie of King Aretas [14]; (1559) Lieutenauntes or debities in realms [14].
ЛЕ Great Prior – заимствование из среднефранцузского языка [ср.-франц. grand prieur (16 век); ср.-франц. grand prieus (14 век)] со значением “lieutenant”:
(1523) Newis from the Capitaine of Purpinian, the which is Great Prior off Seinct Thou's, and the Emperor's Lieutenant there [14];
(1577) Forthwith the Lorde Lieutenant sent to the vowarde, commaunding that they shoulde marche towarde the towne [14].
D. Заимствования из испанского, итальянского и португальского языков
ЛЕ teniente “a lieutenant” является частью солдатского сленга: (1798) Every thing ... is known to the tenientes [14]; (1906) Teniente, Spanish for ‘Lieutenant’ [14]. Ещё одним примером заимствования из романских языков (итальянского и португальского) является ЛЕ Tenente [итал. tenente, португ. tenente]. Первая письменная фиксация в произведении Э. Хемингуэя «Прощай оружие»: (1929) ‘Do they ever shell that battery?’... ‘No, Signor Tenente’ [14].
Заключение
Таким образом, группа ЛЕ, связанных с lieutenant, прошла длинный путь семантического развития, начиная со среднеанглийского периода. Продуктивными способами пополнения словарного состава являлись деривация средствами английского языка (словосложение N+N, Adj. + N, аффиксация, сокращение), а также заимствование из французского, англо-нормандского, испанского, итальянского и португальского языков.
ЛЕ lieutenant заимствована в среднеанглийский язык в 14 веке со значением “an officer civil or military who acts for a superior; a representative, substitute, vicegerent”, «наместник короля или Папы Римского», однако значение, обозначающее воинское звание в сухопутных войсках, зафиксировано в начале 16 века, а воинское звание на военно-морском флоте – в начале 17 века. Для сравнения в немецком языке ЛЕ Leutnant со значением “Stellvertreter, Statthalter” также появилась в начале 16 века [4]. Французский вариант ЛЕ Lieutenant используется в немецком языке в 17 веке, а начиная с 18 века ЛЕ начинает вытесняться ассимилированным вариантом Leutnant, который был принят для немецкой армии как официальный в 1899 году [4].
История воинских званий в России началась с военной реформы Петра I, который создал регулярную армию и флот по европейской модели. В 1701–1917 гг. в России воинское звание лейтенанта существовало только на флоте и следовало за званием младшего лейтенанта (в царской армии – второй обер-офицерский чин во флоте). В других родах войск ему соответствовали другие звания. Дореволюционный чин подпоручика в императорской России соответствует современному званию лейтенанта (звание второй лейтенант в армиях США и Великобритании) [6].
